With Kish’s Campus Expansion Project and the enlargement of the parking lot, the reactions heard throughout the halls are those of complaining because students can’t find a closer spot or are still walking too far to end the building. What about the students that don’t have the luxury of parking closer that have a temporary injury such as a broken ankle, leg or arm, a back problem or someone who just had surgery? These students have to park and walk like everyone else with no accommodations provided.
As an experiment, the first week of school I decided to move my car into a regular parking space. What I mean by regular is that the closest spot was further out into the sixth row, three sections away from the entrance. Having an ankle injury, by the time I limped up to entrance B, tears began to fall down my face because of the pain and swelling.
There can be solutions. One solution that makes perfect sense would be to obtain a doctor’s note, provide it to Student Services and in return the student or staff member can be provided with a “Temporary Parking Permit” with designated parking made available closer to entrance A or B. This could simply be a tag that can be hung around the rear-view mirror.
A second solution could be ground transportation provided by a school shuttle during the hours deemed necessary, using a pass provided by staff so that the driver would know which students and staff members need assistance to and from entrances.
We need to present this problem that has been ignored thus far by contacting Steve Ullrick, Vice President of Student Services at (815) 825-2086 ext.2490 or by writing a letter to the Editor at kscope@kishwaukeecollege.edu.
