My name is Valentina Andrianopoulos. There's only one thing to say about me and that is that I love to write. It has become part of the air I breathe. I'm a fairly open-minded person with a creative twist to everything I do. I also enjoy, soccer, reading, nature, and of course food. And in case you didn't know, I'm Greek. :)

The Kishwaukee College Foundation has been around since the early 1970's and yet, hardly any students know that it exists. It is an amazing opportunity for students to get a head start on their college experience.

"Our mission is to support Kishwaukee College and its students," said Cheryl Pearre, coordinator of foundation development.

On April 26, Kishwaukee College hosted the documentary Green Fire for students to view free of charge. Green Fire is a film that documents Aldo Leopold's career and tells how he shaped the environmental movement. He believed in a sort of "Land Ethics," which set a new view on the relationship between people and nature.

Leopold's life changed when he was out on a mountain hunting some wolves with his friends. He shot a wolf, and the impact of its death forever scarred him.

Well it's finally the end of the school year. This semester flew by so fast, which I'm sure most of us are happy about. The summer is coming and we are all eager to move on to the next stage of our lives. But while we are all preparing to say our farewells, there is one person in particular that I would like to focus on. This person has been here throughout my entire college experience thus far and they have helped shape me into the writer I am today with their inspiration and passion for journalism.

From March 19-April 23, Kishwaukee College hosted Cathy Breslaw's artwork in the art exhibition. The art gallery is open to all Kish students, so those who got to enjoy Breslaw's creative and inspirational work got to do so free of charge! Cathy exhibits her work throughout the U.S. and has several pieces in corporate collections in private businesses. Her work uses an industrial mesh to create beautiful, flowing works of art.

Growing up, I'd always admired high-fashion models. I'd watch them walk down the runway confident and fearless, their hair and makeup in all sorts of colorful, interesting configurations. I'd dreamt that one day I could walk those same runways and find that inner strength that so many of them seemed to portray.

What I hadn't planned on doing was getting half naked in front of a camera man in order to be recognized.

On March 28, the Intercultural Student Association paired up with the Music Club and the Black Student Union to host an open mic in honor of Women’s History Month.

“We wanted to give students and employees a chance to display their talent,” says Tim Lockman, faculty advisor for Intercultural Student Association (ISA). “It gives them an opportunity to appreciate the women who shaped their lives.”

The open mic was hosted in the Kishwaukee College cafeteria, where many students joined together to sing, read poems or just sit back and watch the performance.

Marriage. One word that holds so many different meanings. Most people look forward to the day that they can finally say “I do.” They plan the dress, the ring, the bridesmaids, the color schemes, and everything else. They know exactly where they want it to be and exactly who will be there.

Kishwaukee students all enjoy the opportunities given to them. One among these many opportunities is the ability to join the gym. The gym is located in room A-403. It can be taken as a regular class for one credit or students can buy a gym membership to go work out.

"Access to the Wellness Center can be obtained by taking the PE 140 or 141 courses," explains Mike Wackt, Wellness Center director. "There is also a membership fee for those who do not wish to be in the course which is $70 a semester, $20 a month or $5 a day.  There are no start up fees."

On February 21, Heartland Blood Center visited Kishwaukee College, hosting a blood drive for anyone who was interested. The blood drive was located in the B-100 wing just past the cafeteria. According to the staff that helped out for the drive, about 30 people signed up to help donate blood.

"People really need this blood, because there is really no way to make synthetic blood," explains Kathy Seury, a member of the Heartland Blood Center that partook in the Kishwaukee blood drive.

A few weeks ago, it was my boyfriend Marc's 21st birthday. We had made a reservation at a nice restaurant in Rockford, and I was determined to get there. My best friend Arielle, Marc and I were driving in my car.

And of course, out of nowhere, there was a huge snowstorm that night.

I was really nervous about driving but, naturally, I wanted my boyfriend to have a good time so I casually blew it off. "It's fine," I told him, "I want to drive you there. It's your birthday."

As the year progresses, the difficulty of classes increase. Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming going to school full time (or even part time) and getting one or more homework assignments for each subject you take. Many students drop out, stress out or just don't show up altogether.

Portfolio. That word we all dread. Getting ready for graduation can be pretty stressful, especially when you have to put your college life for the past two years or more into a six-item booklet.

But fear not! Putting together your portfolio isn't as bad as it sounds. You may even have some fun putting it together and reminiscing on your years here at Kishwaukee College.

As of late, Congress has been attempting to pass the bills we have all come to know as Stop Online Piracy Act/Protect Intellectual Property Act (SOPA/PIPA). Over the course of a few months, the SOPA/PIPA bills have captivated the attention of almost every American. They spread like wildfire and led to a series of protests all across the Web.

SOPA and PIPA are two separate bills that threatened to end the Internet as we know it. SOPA was led by the House and PIPA was led by the Senate.

Despite everything we plan on doing when we grow up, life has twists and turns. Sometimes it can be really disappointing to learn that you did not score that perfect A on the test or that she just doesn't have the same feelings towards you.

It started off slow but as days began to pass, soon everyone was talking about how great this increasingly popular workout was. People everywhere were chattering about how different it was and, it seemed, everyone was reaping it’s benefits.

Yoga. I had always thought that this was just something people were doing on Wii Fit. But it turns out that there is a lot more to this spiritual practice.

I’m not going to lie. I miss it all. I miss the stress-free, laze-around with -friends kind of days. I miss getting out of class and having the rest of the day to do whatever I please. I miss calling up some friends and easily getting a large group together for some hang-out time. I miss no work, no “what are you going to do with the rest of your life” scenarios. So I guess the question is: what happened? I can’t believe my life has changed so drastically to the point where everything I was comfortable is suddenly disappearing.

Despite what many students may think, there are plenty of opportunities to experience new and entertaining artists all around the area. There are many new faces appearing in the city of DeKalb, Rochelle, Rockford, and surrounding towns.

Here are some bands that you may be interested in that are expanding right here in our local region:
