Hello :) My name is Marissa but I prefer Rissa. I'm double majoring in Secondary Education and English with a minor in Sociology. I do believe I'm addicted to coffee, I drink about eight cups every time I go to the Junction (which is several times a week). I always have a book on me and it's constantly changing because I read fast. I've been writing for the Kaleidoscope for two semesters now and I will continue to as long as I can.

It’s every parent’s nightmare: holding your newborn and being told by your doctor that the beautiful baby in your arms that can woo you with one tiny smile won’t be here in just over a year. Most parents never have to face this awful situation, but on April 6, 2012 Mike and Laura Canahuati of Houston, Texas were faced with these exact circumstances.

Sexual orientation is defined as one’s natural preference in sexual partners. Most people know the basic terms: heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual. However, many people don’t realize that one’s sexual orientation isn’t limited to those three terms; there is also transsexual, transgender, pansexual and many more. More importantly, many people don’t realize that these terms can be expanded beyond just a sexual nature; it is part of one’s self-identity.

Ever since I knew what the word “career” meant, I’ve been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When someone had asked me when I was little, I would have responded, “I’m going to be a teacher, then the President and then a waitress.” Everyone would laugh and tell me I probably couldn’t be a waitress after being President.  I would never listen to them, I was dead-set on my plan and nothing could sway me.

Kougars, if you look back over your time at Kishwaukee College, is there that one teacher that stands out to you? Is there that one teacher that went above and beyond being just an educator and helped you when you needed it? Is there a teacher that took the time to make you feel confident in yourself and your work? Is there a secretary or counselor or any other staff member who helped make things easier around Kish for you?

It seems like everywhere I go, I’m hearing more and more about the Trayvon Martin shooting. It’s on the news, all over the Internet; there’s even hoodies and other memorabilia being made. For those of you who shockingly haven’t heard about this case, it all started on February 26 when the self-appointed watchman of a neighborhood shot and killed a “suspicious” looking teenager. The teenager was deemed to be “suspicious” because he was wearing a hoodie.

As Harry Potter and Twilight came winding to an end, everyone anticipated what the next great series would be. Out emerged The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The first novel, The Hunger Games, was published in 2008. Since then, the book has sold more than 17.5 million copies including more than a million e-books.  The series has sold over 36.5 million copies according to their publisher, Scholastic. The novel sold so well in e-book form that Amazon even announced Collins as the “Best-selling Kindle author of all time”.

Bucket lists. They’ve been portrayed through movies starring Morgan Freeman, an MTV TV show about teenagers, many different books, etc. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, a bucket list is a list of things you want to do before you “kick the bucket," a phrase used to portray someone who died. Anything can go on these lists, from simply seeing a specific movie to wanting to have a family of your own.

I grew up in a big family. Whenever I try to explain my family dynamic to anyone, all I get is a tilt of the head with that same confused look on their faces. I mean, it’s not that hard to comprehend: I have a dad, mom, stepdad, stepmom, sister, half-brother, half-sister, stepbrother and two stepsisters. However, I think people actually start to get confused when I try to explain how everyone relates to one another and how we came to be this one big family.

For Black History Month, the Kishwaukee Art Gallery decided to honor artist Chaveevah Banks Ferguson by displaying her exhibition titled Illustrations, Paintings & Whimsical Observations.  The exhibit includes not only paintings, but several books and dolls created by Ferguson.

Almost everyone at Kish is of legal voting age. My question to you readers is this: do you actually use your right to vote?

To be completely honest, I never have. I have never been the right age to vote in the Presidential election, but I have been for the elections of the local legislatures.

Politics never interested me. All I saw it as was me picking which person can screw things up slightly less. I tried to watch political debates but all I saw was a bunch of finger pointing and no one actually coming up with solutions to the problems presented.

During the first week of spring semester, I went into Kish’s bookstore to help a friend pick out some school supplies. As I walked around the store, I noticed a bunch of random merchandise that had nothing to do with the school: stuffed animals, camcorders, gaming systems, etc. However, I just brushed it off thinking that people could spend their money on whatever they want. As my friend and I stood in line waiting to make our purchase, I noticed the man in front of us was buying an Xbox Kinect.

A couple weeks ago, my mother gave me a seemingly simple task: Make a Christmas list. It’s a basic list of things I would like as gifts for Christmas. However, when I sat down to write down this list my mind went blank. When did it become so hard to think of things that I need or want? Everything in stores now seems like an over-priced electronic or a breakable plastic trinket.

Before I even ventured to see the Kishwaukee College Theatre’s production of “Becky Shaw”, I was handed a press release about it from my editor. As I read all the details of the production, I was enticed by director Nadine Franklin’s description of the show, “Becky Shaw is a comedy of bad manners, love, sex and ethics among a small group of men and women. Each character is full in that they are human with flaws. The audience often wrestles with who they feel is the bad guy, so to speak.

What was your life like two years ago? How have you changed as a person? Imagine everything you’ve gone through, all your highs and lows. Now imagine having someone be right beside you through it all.

I just don’t understand people. Where has our decency gone? What makes it acceptable to harm someone or their possessions? Wasn’t it back in kindergarten that we learned respect and honesty?

Earlier last week I woke up a little late one day and rushed to get ready for work. As I ran out the door, panicking when I realized my windows were frosted over and I would have to scrape them, making me even more late, I opened my door to start the car and immediately realized that something was not right.

When I graduated high school I kept hearing the conundrum, “College life: good grades, good social life, good sleep. Pick two.” At first I thought that this was just something said to scare freshmen. However, now a few years into my college career, I realize that this is mostly true.

Money problems are nothing new to college students. It seems as if everything is constantly going up in price whether it is at the grocery store or gas at the gas station. With all this inflation, a new fad has emerged: extreme couponing. It’s so popular, the TLC TV channel has an entire series based on it.

Moving out for the first time is a big step in anyone’s life. At the age of 20, I moved into my first apartment this past August. I moved in with my boyfriend, a married couple, and a single guy friend. It sounds like we should have our own sitcom.

I’ve stressed so much that I just got diagnosed with Stress Induced Acid Reflux. The problem is that while my doctor sat there telling me how I need to have less stress in my life, I was thinking about the homework I needed to do that night, what I was going to make for dinner for my boyfriend and me, how I needed to pay my electricity bill that week, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. It never stops.
