My mother birthed me and called me Alexandria. However, the staff calls me Lexi for short. I was born on the sweet summer day of July 6, 1990. I'm nineteen years old and a freshman at Kishwuakee College. I want to major in Creative Writing and publish my own books. I also want to teach Creative Writing to high school students. I plan on transferring to Columbia College in a few years. When I first joined K-scope I wasn't very confident in my writing. I had never written articles before and I was scared when people suggested the class. Turns out, I ended up falling in love with it. I love writing arts and entertainment articles the most, but I will write features, and news articles if needed. I'm excited that K-scope is going digital and I hope to see more things happening with the paper. Kool-aid jammers are cool and Harry Potter pawns Twilight. Just sayin'. If my name ever disappears off of this paper its because Dumbledore has finally sent me my Hogwarts letter. I'll be off in the wizarding world taking down Voldemort with Harry Potter. Fear not, Muggles. I will attempt to send my articles through the use of owls. :)

Things break all the time. Nails break, so do dishes and glass. There are coffee breaks, lunch breaks, prison breaks. You can break a dollar or a horse. Break a leg. Break a promise. Break the silence.

World War II veteran, Donald Schoo, will be presented the very first Honorary Degree from Kishwaukee College on May 14, 2011.

“Everyday it sinks in,” Schoo said with enthusiasm. “When they first told me, I couldn’t believe it. It’s just mind boggling - a huge honor. It really is.”

I’ll always remember the first time she ever had a seizure.

I remember ordering a chocolate cake once. It looked beautiful on the menu and it was just as lovely when it came out. I took a bite and expected heaven, but ended up getting…  Well, let’s just say that what I got wasn’t very good.

Is it just me or do people always seem to want more? More food, more technology, more friends, more respect... It’s like a never-ending cycle of hunger. You may be filled by something temporarily but later on you’ll discover that you are still empty. No matter what you try to fill that space with you’re always going to long for something more.

What is now known as Black History Month originally was founded as Negro History Week in the year 1926 by the Father of Black History, Carter G. Woodson. What was behind this designated week was meant to increase mindfulness and teach Americans about African American lifestyles and cultures that differed from their own, because history books almost entirely ignored the African American population within their own country.

Hi. Let’s talk about kidney stones. The most terrible little demons in all existence.

Finished your homework? Have nothing to do between classes? Well if you get up and wander the halls, you may find some magic lurking around at Kish. A group of four boys were spotted playing Magic in Kish’s cafeteria on January 18, 2010. When approached, the boys said they play the card game between classes or when they have nothing better to do.

“How are you?”

That is the first pathetic little sentence that slips over my tongue. He cocks his head and then smiles. He tells me that he’s been good and not much has changed. Really? Nothing has changed? Nothing at all? Is this not the same person who you used to stay up all night with on the phone? The person who used to say that you were everything, the one that let you hold his hand when you were scared.

The Latino Club is recruiting new members for next semester. When I spoke to member Erica Haerta, she was able to give insight about what the club does and what it stands for.

PTK was happy to serve chili out to their fellow Kougars  - and on a very good day too. December 1st was the first snow here in our area, and the chili was sure to warm up the students and staff. PTK tries to have a chili cook off once every year. The club wanted to help the Soup Kitchen in DeKalb and they did that by selling their chili. All money will be sent to the Soup Kitchen and to other food pantries in the area. With this kind of compassion they will help the Soup Kitchen feed the homeless, the near homeless or people who are just plain lonely.

This November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month. It’s going on right now, all over the United States. Epilepsy affects approximately 2 million people in the America, and it affects people of all different ages and races. It is catergorized by “recurrent, unproved seizures.” It is the result of abnormal electric signals in the brain. Brain cells communicate and send out electric signals in an orderly pattern. In the case of epilepsy, these signals are abnormal and that’s what causes the person to have a seizure.
