My name is Jessi Haish and I am the editor-in-chief for the Kaleidoscope. My focus is currently on news and feature articles as I hope to write for magazines someday and this is a great stepping stone. I am a journalism major and spend a lot of time working on my blog, "The Musings of a Wannabe Star" which can be found at www.jhaish.blogspot.com. On my blog I write about "life, love and music" and I've found that blogging is a great way to continually hone my writing skills.I love Kishwaukee College and am very excited for new improvements with the Kaleidoscope going digital and making more of an 'on campus' presence. Be sure to check out our Facebook fan page and follow our Twitter tweets! Send me your ideas, comments, and suggestions to jhaish09@gmail.com!

Through my last twelve editorials you’ve seen a glimpse of Kishwaukee through my eyes. Although I’ve mentioned my issues with certain adjunct professors, I’ve also had a few that have completely changed my life. I think that the least I can to do thank them for their hard work and dedication as professors and friends is to honor them in my column.

I’ve been going to Kishwaukee for two years now and there is something I still can’t get over: the parking lots. As I approach the entrances on Malta Road, I feel a slight knot in my stomach, knowing what lies ahead.

Kishwaukee College will be participating in the Noel Levitz Student Satisfaction Survey the week of March 21. The Noel Levitz survey is available for universities and community colleges and was created to help colleges find out what students need, want, and disregard, as well as chart campus progress in certain areas. Unlike most campus surveys, this will be coming from the company, but will be found in the student email account.

I’ve been dealing with a lot as of late, to say the least. I’ve got quite a bit on my plate, and not every day is the best day.

But lately more than ever, I don’t mind.

At the beginning of this semester I assigned two Kish clubs to every staff member. “Keep in touch with the advisers; always know what’s going on with these clubs. I want us to be able to cover what’s going on and I don’t want any more excuses for not having any news stories,” I recall preaching. The staff nodded.

The other day… I thought I was having a meltdown; I thought it was an isolated incident. But then I started talking to people and I figured out I wasn’t the first one to do it and I certainly won’t be the last. They dubbed it “the mid-college crisis.”

It truly makes sense now that I know it exists. I’m in my second year of college, I’ll be transferring in the fall, and I feel like I’m truly starting to find my footing. So, right now would be the perfect time to start having a breakdown about the rest of my life, right?

You can tell that it’s the beginning of a new semester. Not because I’m still walking into the wrong classroom or because I still haven’t gotten into the “swing of things,” but rather because my wallet is empty.

Last time I had a problem with certain adjunct instructors. This time, I’m out for you, Kougars. I’ve got a beef and I can’t let it go.

You’re making yourselves miserable. You come in almost every day to class. You slide into your desk minutes before the class starts. You leave before class is over. If you even come at all. You leave Kishwaukee, and go on with your lives like you were never even here.

Adjunct. It’s a word that I was introduced to when I first started attending Kishwaukee College. It didn’t have a negative connotation until a few weeks ago.

Let me explain myself. I have such immense respect for instructors. I realize how trying their jobs may be, and I respect them for what they do and the passion they have for it. But I will be the first to admit that my biggest pet peeve is simply terrible teachers.

We’re all college students; we’re all here. Taking classes to broaden our horizons, make a name for ourselves and test our skills. We’re really here to figure out who we are, what we want to do and how we’re going to get there....wherever there is.

The parking lot is full, butts are in desks (for now) and syllabi have been read to the death. It's the start of a new semester, which means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. To me, it means a fresh perspective as the editor-in-chief of the paper you now hold in your hands. I'm at my second year here at Kishwaukee College, a place I've grown fond of.
