This is my second semester at Kishwaukee College, and my first semester on the Kaleidoscope, and I am really excited for the opportunity to write things that other people might actually read. I graduated from Oregon High School last spring, and after a summer at LOMC, the second greatest place in the world second only to OHS' own band room, I decided that Kishwaukee was the place to go.  Not only am I really excited to begin writing articles, but I am really nervous too! I hope to write interesting articles that the students of Kishwaukee College will find informative and entertaining.

In the two years that I've been at Kish I have taken a lot of classes and met a lot of really interesting teachers. But I don't think that any of them have had the same effect on me that Melissa Blake has.

When I walked in to Jou111 on the first day of class and saw my teacher I was a little skeptical. If you've never met Melissa, it would be hard to explain, but Melissa doesn't look like everyone else.  Melissa is handicapped. I don't think that I had ever been around someone that was anything like Melissa, and at first I didn't know how to handle it.

The year is 1907. Bruce J. Ismay, chairman of the White Star Line, and Lord Pirrie meet for dinner. After dinner the two men begin to discuss the fierce competition between the White Star Line and its competitor in sea travel, Cunard Line. Over coffee and cigars, these two men hatched a daring plan to build not just one, but three massive, luxury liners. These ships would be bigger and quicker than Cunard’s liners, the Mauretania and the Lusitania. They would be named Olympic, Gigantic (later renamed Brittanic), and Titanic.

One hundred years ago this month the Titanic set sail across the Atlantic  Ocean. A ship of dreams, the whole world was watching the maiden voyage. But what came sailing into New York's Harbor was not the eagerly awaited Titanic, but the Carpathia, carrying the 700-some shocked and exhausted survivors. No one knew exactly where the Titanic had gone down and many thought she would never be seen again.

I’m pretty sure I’ve loved Harry Potter my entire life. I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone when I was in first grade, and I was hooked instantly. Ever since then, Harry, all of his friends and his enemies have been a huge part of my life. I’ve read all of the books several times over. I waited in line at midnight for most of the them. I’ve seen all of the movies on their opening weekends and have spent many hours joyfully debating with my friends over the books’ finer details.

The new front entry way for Kishwaukee College. This will serve as the school's "front door" welcoming new students, their families, and other visitors. On the left side of the picture you can see the bottom of the new stair case that will lead upstairs to student services.

Since Jr. High every teacher I've ever had has made a huge deal out of this thing called bullying. I knew what bullying was, but I never thought it was a big deal. "Kids just need to toughen up", I thought. I went all through Jr. High thinking that way.

On March 7 the Student Government Association will be hosting a comedy show called A Shot of Reality from Bass-Schuler Entertainment (the same group that brought the show Sex Signals to Kishwaukee College) and Mission Improvable Productions.

About a month ago I got a speeding ticket.  Yeah, I know, not exactly a good thing. Yes, I was embarassed. What made it even worse was the cop who pulled me over wasn't exactly a nice guy. Not that I expected him to be my best buddy, but I thought that he would at least respectfully wait for me to dig through my glove compartment and find my insurance card and registration. Instead, he was really gruff and demanding, and acted like I was taking up entirely too much of his precious time by being rude and uncooperative, when really, I was the complete opposite.

All of these interests and cultures have lead to a campus with many different student clubs and organizations for students who are looking to get involved. As Election Day gets closer the campaigns for president are getting that much more intense. Politicians are spending more and more money to tell us that they know best and we should vote for them.  They buy commercials and take long trips to make big speeches telling us why they are the perfect choice.  I, however, wouldnt vote for any of my current options for president, and there are three simple reasons why.

Have you ever seen the show the Big Bang Theory? I love that show. Not only is it hysterically funny, but from the first episode I felt like I could really relate to it. Why? Because all through highschool, I felt like Penny. Penny is the ridiculously average girl who happens to live near geniuses Leonard and Sheldon. Through circumstances, she ends up being a part of their circle of nerdy genius friends, who all happen to be guys.  In high school, most of my friends were super-nerdy boys.

On December 12, 2011 the editors of the Kaleidoscope took a tour of the new Student Center, which is on schedule to open spring semester 2013. It isn’t unusual for a student of any age to be asked how school is going. It is a simple conversation starter, especially if you don’t know the person well. Personally, I get asked this question all the time. I’ve always just said, “Oh, it is great. Hard, but I really like a challenge.”

Now the end of the semester is finally approaching. As I frantically study for finals and finish writing final papers, I’ve been taking a serious look back at the last three semesters I’ve been in college, and I’ve come to a startling conclusion. I really hate it.

Kishwaukee College students and staff attended a Veteran's Day Ceremony in Jenkins Auditorium. Those who have family and friends in the military took a moment to honor them by saying their name aloud. Donald Schoo, WWII veteran, the guest speaker, talked about his time as a spy for France and what it meant to him to be a veteran, "I love my country dearly...This time of the year everybody you meet on the street shakes your hand. That is the nicest thing you can do for a soldier.
